Creating a Focal Point

FINISHED PIECE

Sometimes projects begin with nothing more than a concept photo and rough dimensions. This client in Georgetown had a fire pit under a covered porch and needed a way to better control smoke while maintaining the look and feel of the space.

The goal was function first—direct smoke upward and away—but it also needed to serve as a decorative centerpiece that matched the rustic structure.

Choosing the Right Approach

Rather than using a prefabricated solution, we built a custom smoke hood designed specifically for the space and application.

We:

  • Formed the dome using 16-gauge sheet metal

  • Rolled and shaped steel components to create a smooth parabolic curve

  • Fabricated the structural frame from 2-inch x 1/8-inch flat bar

  • Cut and drilled each hole individually for rivet installation

  • Designed the hood to integrate with a 10-inch stove pipe for improved smoke control

The Result

The finished hood now directs smoke up and away from the covered porch area, making the fire pit far more comfortable to use.

Beyond solving the functional problem, the dome creates a strong visual centerpiece that fits naturally with the surrounding timber structure.

Projects like this highlight what custom fabrication makes possible—taking a concept and shaping raw steel into something both practical and built to last.
