Bringing New Life to a Willys Jeep: Custom Hard-Top Fabrication

The Willy's Jeep is one of the most iconic American 4x4 vehicles ever built. It’s rugged, versatile, and trusted by Allied forces during World War II. Jeff has been working on his Jeep project for years. Recently, he brought it to us with a new challenge: make an old aftermarket hard top—originally meant for a CJ—fit his 1947 Willy's MB.

The top had definitely seen better days. When it arrived, it was full of moss, dents, and rust. It stood about four inches taller than the windshield and revealed three separate paint layers underneath: yellow, red, and white. To say it had “history” would be an understatement.

Making It Fit Like It Belonged There

We didn’t just want to attach the top. We wanted it to look like it was always meant to be there. That meant getting creative.

We:

  • Framed out the doors.

  • Built a header over the windshield so the top could handle snow load.

  • Patched aluminum corners that had been notched out for tail lights.

  • Straightened damaged areas and brought structure back to the top.

One of the biggest goals on this build was to preserve the originality of the tub. Rather than drilling into it, we used a clever combination of clamps and plates to secure the top, doors, and header solidly in place.

Not Finished… Yet

This Jeep still has a future round of upgrades ahead. When the budget allows, we’ll:

  • Trim everything out

  • Sandblast

  • Powder coat or paint to Jeff’s final vision

But even at this stage, this Willy's looks incredibly unique. Honestly, it looks like it rolled out of the factory with a hard top on it. That’s always the best compliment: when custom fabrication looks “right.”

Jeff was thrilled with how it turned out. You can check out his review here: Jeff’s review.
