With Natural Patina

Steel planter box before rusting
BEFORE EXPOSURE

As part of a yard refresh, this customer wanted a custom planter box and matching railing that felt intentional—something that looked like it had always belonged in the space.

Rather than painting or powder coating, we used raw steel and let the material do what it does best.

Choosing the Finish

The goal was a warm, weathered look without the cost or upkeep of traditional coatings.

AFTER EXPOSURE

We started with clean bare steel and:

  • Built a custom planter box and matching railing to fit the space

  • Force-rusted the steel using a simple vinegar and water solution

  • Placed the pieces in the sun, allowing the patina to develop naturally

  • Achieved a rich, even rust finish in about one day

  • Clear-coated the steel once the color was right to lock in the look and prevent further rusting

The Result

Looks like it's always been there.
