Something From Nothing

AFTER LINDSEED OIL APPLICATION
AFTER LINDSEED OIL APPLICATION

I’d always wanted to build my own offset smoker, and one slow winter I had a couple old dead air compressors lying around the shop. Rather than scrap them, I decided to turn them into something useful. Using scrap steel, rebar, flat bar, and leftover cutoffs from around the shop, it came together piece by piece into a custom offset smoker.

Ten Years Later… Time for Some TLC

After about ten years of use, weather and heat had definitely taken their toll. The smoker was still solid, but the exterior needed some attention.

We originally tried treating the rust with Ospho, hoping it would convert and stabilize the surface. But the weather came in with too much moisture and the process didn’t go the way we wanted.

So back to work. We ended up sanding it down and starting over.

Bringing It Back

Once the metal was sanded and wire wheeled, we brought it up to 350 degrees and finished it with boiled linseed oil. We'll see how it holds up this year.
